Construction & Materials Comparison
Saatva Classic = Euro pillow top + strong dual coil system
The Saatva Classic has a traditional innerspring build.

In recent years with the development of high-density foam, many all foam and hybrid (foam + coils) mattresses have dominated the mattress industry.
For people who prefer a traditional innerspring mattress that is durable and breathable, the Saatva Classic is a great choice.
The 3 inch plush pillow top feels plush like a luxury hotel mattresses.

The dual-coil design responds to pressure offering deep pressure relief with strong support. There are two spring coils stacked together, one for deep support and one for more defined contouring.
Purple Plus = engineered airflow + adaptive grid response

The Purple Plus’s defining feature is the GelFlex Grid, a proprietary hyper-elastic polymer arranged in a grid. The material is non-toxic, hypoallergenic and CertiPUR-US certified to meet the highest safety standards.
It differs from memory foam, as it doesn’t trap body heat, which helps with cooling, and it collapses under pressure and rebounds quickly instead of molding to a body slowly like memory foam.

Specs Side-By-Side

|---|---|---|
| Height | 11″ | 11.5 |
| Comfort System | 2″ GelFlex Grid + foams ( | 3″ Euro pillow top + dual coils |
| Firmness Choices | One “medium” feel (often rated medium) | Plush Soft / Luxury Firm / Firm |
| Adjustable Base | Compatible with suitable bases per Purple | Only 11.5″ works with adjustable base |
Firmness & Feel
The Purple Plus has a medium firmness and a buoyant feel that makes you feel like you are sleep “on it” not “in it,” like many memory foam mattresses.
The bounciness is controlled, not springy like a coil system, but responsive to movement making it easy to change positions. You get pressure relief without your hips or shoulders sinking in too much.
The Saatva Classic is sold in three different choices for firmness (plush soft/ luxury firm/ firm). We purchased and tested the luxury firm, which had the same medium firmness as the Purple Plush, but with the soft, plush feeling pillow top.
If you want something softer with more contouring, then choose the plush soft firmness. If you want a truly firm mattress with no sink, which is best for stomach sleepers and heavier body types, then choose the firm.
Hot Take: when we first laid on the Saatva Classic, it felt like we were at a luxury resort. When we first laid on the Purple Plus, it felt cool and light, like we were floating.
Cooling: Which Mattress Sleeps Cooler?
We have to give the crown for cooling winner to the Purple Plus. The unique grid design made of polymer give excellent cooling and is the primary advantage to choosing this mattress.
The Saatva Classic is not as hot as a memory foam mattress and delivers sufficient coolness. Their dual coil system facilitates airflow and breathability on the bottom layer of the mattress and the the plush pillow top has a breathable cover.
If you are a true hot sleeper who wakes up sweaty and needs to blast the AC to keep cool, Purple will suit your needs better. If you sleep at a normal temperature, but enjoy the benefits of coolness and plushness while you sleep, then Saatva is an excellent choice.
Sleeping Position Performance
Here is a breakdown of how each mattresses ranked in various sleep positions.
| Sleep Position | Purple Plus | Saatva Classic(Luxury Firm baseline) |
|---|---|---|
| Side | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Back | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Stomach | ⭐⭐⭐½ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ |
| Combination | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ |
Side Sleepers
Purple is great for side sleepers who hate the sinking feeling and want pressure relief without being stuck. Saatva Classic Luxury Firm also ranked well for side sleeping and it was easy to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Saatva Classic can also be ordered in Plush Soft firmness instead, so if you are a side sleeper who wants a lot of cushion, we recommend that.
Back Sleepers
The Saatva Classic was excellent support for back sleepers and is hard to beat.

The support was strong and balances and my hips didn’t sink, but I felt cushioned. Purple also performed well and the material gave nice lift and support in the hip area.
Stomach Sleepers
Neither mattress is ideal for stomach sleeping because of the level of softness. We tested the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm and felt strain in our lower backs when lying on the stomach.
We recommend a firmer mattress if you mainly sleep on your stomach to prevent your hips and stomach from sinking, which can cause lower back pain and spinal strain. Saatva Classic comes in a Firm softness that would be better for stomach sleepers.
Durability & Lifespan
It’s tough to crown a winner for durability, as both mattresses have excellent design and durably materials that indicate that should last 7-10 years with normal use and a proper mattress foundation.
We slightly favor the Saatva Classic for durability because of it being hybrid and the dual coil system will withstand weight over time the best.
Many memory foam mattress will have dips and dents from body impressions where weight is condensed the most like on the shoulder area and hip area if you are a side sleeper.
If you are worried about this, Purple Plus is a better choice because the polymer grid is especially resistant to collapse and disintegrating over time. It’s very flexible and rebounds quicker than foam or other fabric cushioning.
Pricing and Value
Here is the type of pricing and discounting that you can expect from each brand:
| Brand / Model | MSRP / Listed Price (Queen) | Frequent Sale Price Range (Observed) | Typical Promo Pattern | What’s Included (Value Notes) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saatva Classic Queen (Luxury Firm) | $2,179 | ~$1,525 – $1,852 | Promotions often range 15%–30% off depending on timing/partner offers | Free white glove delivery + in-home setup; mattress removal often offered (varies by promo/terms) |
| Purple Plus Queen | Dynamic / varies (price changes on page) | ~$1,899 | Promo pricing varies and can change frequently on the product page | Premium is driven by GelFlex Grid engineering + cooling design; standard boxed delivery |
We purchased both mattresses directly from each brand’s website, and one thing became immediately clear: pricing is highly promo-dependent.
The “real” price you pay often comes down to timing, seasonal events, and whether you catch an active discount code.
For Saatva, we bought the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm (Queen) at a 15% discount off the $2,179 listed price, bringing our total to $1,852.
That purchase included free white glove delivery and in-home setup, and mattress removal was offered at the time.
A few weeks later, we noticed Saatva running a much larger promotion—up to 30% off—which would have dropped the same mattress to roughly $1,525. In other words: Saatva’s pricing can swing meaningfully depending on the promo window you hit.
PurplePlus pricing also changes frequently. The price shown on the product page can adjust dynamically based on current promotions.
We did not use any special discount codes and paid $1,899 for the PurplePlus (Queen).
Overall, these two mattresses are closer in price than many shoppers expect, especially when you catch a strong Saatva promotion.
The value difference comes down to what you’re paying for: with Purple, you’re paying a premium for a unique feel and cooling-driven engineering built around the GelFlex Grid.
With Saatva, you’re paying for a luxury, traditional innerspring design, a plush Euro-top feel, and the added convenience of white glove delivery and setup.

Is Purple better than Saatva for back pain?
It depends on the type of back pain. Saatva has better lumbar support and the design focused on helping to maintain a neutral spine. If you have back pain that is worsened by sinking too much, Purple Plus can feel better under your hips and gives great pressure relief for side sleepers.
Which sleeps cooler?
Purple’s grid design and materials make it the best for facilitating cool sleeping. Both mattresses sleep cooler than memory foam, but if you are very temperature sensitive, Purple Plus is the better choice.
Which is better for couples?
During testing, Purple had better motion isolation, but Saatva had good motion (the thick pillow top helped absorb motion) and stronger edge support.
Couples who are sensitive to each others movement should choose Purple Plus, and couples who drift to sleep closer to the edge of the mattress will benefit from Saatva’s design.
