If you are looking for a medium-firm hybrid mattress, the Helix Midnight deserves consideration. It is marketed as a medium-feel built specifically for side sleepers, with solid cushioning at the shoulders and hips, but not so much that you sink too deep. In this hands-on Helix Midnight review, we will evaluate the mattress for comfort, firmness, pressure relief, cooling and give our thoughts on who it is best for.
Mattress Millionaires Quick Verdict: Helix Midnight Review

The Helix Midnight is known for being a balanced, hybrid mattress that meets the needs of side sleepers for a reasonable price. If you are an average-weight sleeper (under 200 pounds) and want a versatile feel that is not as plush as an all-foam bed and not as firm and flat as an innerspring bed, then the Helix Midnight is a solid choice.
It is a true medium feel with a unique blend of contouring, responsiveness, and support at an affordable price. It is not the coolest mattress, the most luxurious, or the best choice for a heavier stomach sleeper.

Hands-On Testing: Helix Midnight
Unboxing & First Impression

The Helix Midnight arrived in a box that was a bit more difficult to transport from our doorstep to the bedroom as it didn’t have built-in cutout handles to make lifting easy. It was easy to unroll from the plastic and expanded fully in 2 hours.

Most notable was the absence of any off-gassing odor. Other mattresses we have tested a the $1,000-and-under price points, had much stronger smells, so this was a nice surprise and gave me confidence that it is made from quality materials.
The initial sensation was that the cover was not cool to the touch, but felt soft and cottony. There wasn’t that immediate sinking in sensation, like you get with a foam topper. It was just soft and regained its shape immediately after pressure was removed. So this is a great choice for anyone who is sensitive to smell and who wants softness without the slow response of foam.

Comfort
The Helix Midnight delivers pleasant cushioning on top with strong support underneath. It doesn’t feel ultra plush or too flat and rigid, making an excellent choice for a medium feel.
Helix markets the Midnight as a “medium feel built for side sleeper support and pressure point relief,” but we feel it is less of a specialist, plush mattress designed to relieve pressure for side sleepers. More so, it is a well-balanced hybrid that is a safe choice for couples and combo sleepers who want contour without feeling stuck in sinking foam.

Mattress Millionaires Firmness Rating: 5/10
(1 = ultra soft, 10 = very firm)
During testing in various sleep positions, we give the Helix Midnight a 5/10 for firmness. It lands in the middle, not leaning towards more plush or more rigid. This means that side sleepers won’t feel it is as soft as a pillow top mattress. Lightweight sleepers might experience it to be firmer as well.
Pressure Relief
The Helix Midnight delivers excellent pressure relief without being too soft. If you are a side sleeper who enjoys a firm feel, but also want to avoid waking up with aches in your shoulders and hips, this mattress will deliver in those areas with that sensation.

Our opinion is that it is a great choice if your priority is to reduce shoulder and hip pressure without losing stability and strong structure.
It is a better choice than a cheaper soft all-foam mattress or cheap pillow top mattress because it feels great all night long, not just the first 10 minutes.
Support
The support is good and kept our spine in a comfortable, neutral position throughout the night, especially in the side and back sleep positions. However, if you fall into the heavier sleeper category or are a strict stomach sleeper, you might need a more supportive, firmer model.
Motion Isolation
The Helix Midnight is a good choice for couples who want strong motion isolation. During our 10 lb ball drop test, we observed minimal motion transfer, so you won’t have to worry about one partner disturbing the other when they change positions.

These results match general hybrid performance and benefits. You get less bouncing and movement than an innerspring, but without the sinking feeling of a dense all-foam mattress.
Edge Support
Many consumers may not factor in edge support when they are shopping for a new mattress, but it is more important than you think. Good edge support impacts how easy it is to get in and out of bed, and if you sleep with a partner, having good edge support means you can use the entire surface without sacrificing comfort and support.
During our edge support test, we noted 2 inches of compression when sitting on the edge of the Helix Midnight.

This is a strong performance and more evidence that it is a good choice for couples. We also liked how it is constructed with a reinforced edge around the top of the mattress.
Cooling
During our cooling test, the Helix Midnight felt moderately cool after laying on the mattress for 30 minutes. The hybrid design helps facilitate airflow, but it’s not a specialty cooling mattress. Helix offers cooling features for upgrades, so if cooling is a top priority and you are a hot sleeper, you should consider these.
Responsiveness
We give the Helix Midnight an 8.4/10 for responsiveness. It was easier to move around on and change positions than all-foam beds. This makes it a solid choice for combination sleepers who don’t want to feel stuck in a lot of cushioning or sinking memory foam.
Sinkage
During our 10 lbs ball test, we observed moderate sinkage. While sleeping in a side position, we noticed that the mattress offers some contouring, but not a deep, hugging sensation.
If you want a more luxurious, plush feel, you should check out a thicker mattress or upgrade to the Luxe model.
Durability
The hybrid design and quality of the materials are an indication that the Midnight should last 5 – 7 years and is more durable than a cheaper all-foam bed. It is made of CertiPUR-US foam which meets the highest standards of quality and safety.
Helix offers a limited lifetime warranty, so you can rest easy that they stand behind their product.
Noise & Off-Gassing
Most mattresses that include foam and are delivered compressed in box have a mild smell for a few days after being opened, but we didn’t notice any odor or off-gassing from the Helix Midnight, which was a happy surprise.Noise while shifting positions was minimal, and we did not observe any creaking from the 1000+ individually wrapped coils.
Sex Performance
We give the Helix Midnight an 8.8/10 for Sex Performance. Most couples will find that the Helix Midnight meets their needs due to the minimal noise, strong edge support, and good responsiveness, which makes it easy to move on and change positions across the surface.
Sleep Positions
The Helix Midnight is the most ideal for side sleepers, back sleepers and couples. Stomach sleepers might need a firmer surface or one that has more support for the hips and torso. Some side sleepers might want more cushioning or a more plush feel, even though they will still get good pressure relief with the Midnight.
| Sleep Position | Performance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Best fit for most side sleepers. Strong pressure relief at the shoulders and hips with enough support to help keep the spine aligned. |
| Back Sleepers | ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ | A good match for lightweight to average-weight back sleepers who want a balanced medium feel with light contouring. |
| Stomach Sleepers | ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ | May work for some lightweight stomach sleepers, but many will likely need a firmer mattress with more support under the hips. |
| Combination Sleepers | ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ | Easy enough to move around on, with a balanced hybrid feel that works well for sleepers who change positions during the night. |
| Heavy Sleepers | ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ | Support is decent, but heavier sleepers may want a firmer and more reinforced model for better long-term support and durability. |
Construction
The Helix Midnight is a medium feeling hybrid mattress composed of 8 layers and a total thickness of 11.5 inches.

You can upgrade you purchase to include a GlacioTex Cooling Pillow Top or an ErgoAlign Layer to relieve back pain.
Here is a breakdown of the Helix Midnight layer construction for the base model:
| Layer | Material | Purpose | What You’ll Notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cover | Soft-touch breathable cover | Creates a smooth, breathable surface feel | A clean, soft top that feels comfortable right away |
| Comfort Layer | Memory foam comfort layer | Cushions pressure points at the shoulders and hips | Light contouring with a gentle body hug, especially on your side |
| Transition Layer | Responsive support foam | Helps prevent too much sink and supports alignment | A more balanced feel that keeps the mattress from feeling overly plush |
| Support Foam Layer | Ultra high-density memory foam | Adds deeper support and acts as a buffer between the comfort foams and coils | A sturdier, more controlled feel as your body settles into the mattress |
| Coil Layer | Individually wrapped coils | Provides core support, airflow, and bounce | Better support under the body, easier movement, and more airflow than all-foam beds |
| Base Layer | DuraDense foam | Stabilizes the mattress and supports the coil unit | A sturdier overall feel and better long-term structure |
| Profile | Approx. 11.5″ total height | Gives the mattress its medium-profile hybrid build | Feels substantial, but not overly tall or bulky on most bed frames |
Pricing & Value
The Midnight has very good value for a hybrid. A queen with no upgrades is $999. It’s not trying to be the most luxurious mattress, but to give the average consumer enough support, pressure relief, comfort and couple-friendly features to be a solid choice.
We purchased a queen-sized Helix Midnight standard mattress (no upgrades) for $999. This price was reflected on mattress purchase pages as including a 30% discount from the full price with a promotional code.
Each mattress is made-to-order, but still ships very quickly in 2 – 5 business days. Other made-to-order mattresses that we have tested, like the Saatva Classic took over 2 weeks to ship and cost twice as much.
Helix also includes free shipping, 120-night sleep trial period for returns and a limited lifetime warranty.
Comparisons
Helix Midnight vs Helix Midnight Luxe
The Luxe is more premium with 2 more inches of total thickness and costs $800 – $1,000 more. It offers copper gel memory foam to help with cooling and an additional CoolForce Layer to disperse heat away from the foam.
The standard Midnight will appeal to budget-conscious shoppers who don’t mind a simple design that still offers excellent pressure relief and good support.
Helix Midnight vs softer foam
Despite the many layers of foam, the Midnight feels easier to move on and has less sinkage that other all-foam beds we have tested. You get better edge support as well.
Helix Midnight vs firmer support-focused hybrids
Strict stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers may prefer a firmer mattress than the Helix Midnight. Those who want comfort and pressure relief in the hips and shoulders will like the Midnight best.
Mattress Millionaires Final Verdict
The Helix Midnight is a smart buy for shoppers who want a true medium-feel hybrid at a low prices (under $1,000) that offers pressure relief without too much memory foam or sinking.
In our testing, we felt it would work best for side sleepers, couples, combination sleepers, and average-weight back sleepers. It had strong performance in many of the categories that are important to couples like, solid motion isolation, pressure relief and reinforced edge support.
Since it is not overly plush or luxurious, it would not me best for side sleepers who want a plush feel or deep contouring, heavier sleepers who need a firmer surface or hot sleepers who need advanced cooling.
It is easy to recommend the Helix Midnight to sleepers looking for an affordable and dependable hybrid that is comfortable in most sleep positions. It delivers well-rounded performance and feels supportive.
