After sleeping on the Purple Plus for 3 nights, we feel it delivers excellent cooling and comfort. It has a unique, responsive feel that is very buoyant, so you don’t feel like you are sinking into sand like some other high-density foam mattresses. This bounciness and weak edges are the only downsides for some consumers, as it is not ideal for couples or those who want firm support.

Unboxing & First Impressions

The Purple Plus arrived on our doorstep in a giant purple roll. It was heavy, but easy to transport to the bedroom as it had strong fabric handles on each end.

You can either lift it with a partner or just roll it on in your home.

The packaging and presentation was  an excellent, unique design. Upon unzipping the outer cover, you receive a small welcome packet with set up instructions, branded sleep masks, a fidget in the shape of a bed made out of Purple foam, and a branded cutter to help remove the multiple thick plastic layers compressing the mattress without damaging the mattress.

These thoughtful customer experience details really make Purple stand out from their competitors and show they understand the customer experience of unboxing a mattress.

Sadly I didn’t see the cutting tool until after I fully opened the mattress, so I struggled a bit to careful cut through the plastic with scissors.

Once opened, the queen size mattress quickly sprung to live and unrolled fully on the bed frame.

How Long Does It Take For The Purple Plus To Expand?

Purple recommends to wait at least 6 hours for the mattress to assume its full shape and to wait 24 for it to completely expand, but there wasn’t a big noticeable difference in thickness and feel from unboxing to day one.

Also, even though it was tightly compressed in multiple layers of plastic, we did not notice a strong off-gassing smell; a testament to the high-quality, non-toxic materials Purple uses.

Detailed Testing Notes

We noted weak edge support. When we sat on the edge of the mattress, we measured approximately 4 inches of compression, which is deeper compressions than average medium foam mattresses at a $1,500+ price point.

Hot Take: Purple clearly understands their customers and makes opening their mattresses a premium tech experience instead of just a mattress.

Many foam mattress use memory foam for the top layer to provide deep contouring for pressure relied and comfort, but Purple uses a layered foam system that has been designed to support, flex and breathe all at the same time. Their GelFlex Grid is highly responsive, which gives it the buoyancy, and adapts instantly to your body weight.

For sleepers who want the softness and support of foam but hate the slow molding memory foam, this is a great choice. It is genuinely different from other mattresses we have tested, and a main strength is the durable polymer grid design promotes excellent airflow, so it is noticeably more cooling than average foam mattresses.

It delivers the comfort of foam, but is significantly cooler compared with memory foam that tends to retain heat because it gets trapped in the high-density foam and is also designed to be heat activated to contour to your body.

The cover is also designed to facilitate cooling and has breathable fabric that is 98% polyester and 2% spandex. Furthermore, the knit design is also non-toxic.

Purple Plus vs Other Purple Models

Purple Plus is a more premium version of the original Purple mattress. Moreover, it has two layers of foam in the base for extra support and stability and extra layer towards the top to facility cooling and breathability.

Purple Plus is mainly constructed with high-quality polyurethane foam that will meet the industry standard of a 7 – 10 year lifespan. Purple offers a 10 year limited warranty, which would cover structural problems and defects in workmanship, but not stains and tears cause by rough use.

We scoured reviews and most people maintain that their Purple has lasted 10 years, which is great. Furthermore, general guidelines recommend replacing a mattress every 7 to 10 years to maintain optimal sleep health and spine alignment.

Also, the polymer grid design of the mattress gives Purple a great advantage for increased durability. While Purple doesn’t public disclose foam densities used, polyurethane base foams typically last longer when exceeding 1.8 lb density. Therefore, the higher the foam density, the more resistant it is to breaking apart under pressure.

Additionally, the polymer grid itself is more resistant to compression fatigue than memory foam because it distributes weight evenly, preventing specific spots from being wore down more quickly with use.

We feel that the $1,500 price point is a good value for what you get. It’s below the price of luxury mattresses and speciality mattresses that are $2,000+ and  Purple comes with innovative cooling technology, exceptional packaging and delivery service, and premium materials.

You need to buy a Purple mattress directly from Purple online or their branded retail stores, so you can’t comparison shop among retailers and distributors. Therefore, your best bet to get the lowest price is to look for promotions, discount codes, and holiday sales.

In 2025, they offered a flat 20% a few times during the year if you shopped in-store. We also saw the deepest discounts on Black Friday and President’s Day.

The Purple Plus delivers strong cooling performance, a distinctive floating feel and buoyant foam all wrapped in high-quality materials that are inline with the price. You get a very comfortable, medium support mattress without the deep sinking sensation of memory foam.

The downsides are the poor motion isolation and weak edge support, making it not ideal for couples who are sensitive to each others movements. However, if you are a solo sleeper who values cooling and comfort, this is a great choice.

Does the Purple Plus feel like memory foam?

No, the Purple Plus has a distinctive feel resulting from Purple’s signature GelFlex grid foam layers. Furthermore, this gives the mattress the softness and pressure relief of foam, but with a bouncing floating feel that is also supportive. If you don’t like the body hugging sensation of memory foam, then give the Purple Plus a try.

Does motion transfer a lot?

Yes, one downside of the GelFlex grid is that it makes motion transfer more noticeable because of the buoyancy of the foam. Couples may notice each others motions more than a typical foam, medium mattress.

In our drop test with a 10 lbs weighted ball, we noticed motion disturbance across the mattress surface within 1-2 seconds. This was a higher rate than other foam medium medium firm mattresses we have tested.

When I was testing it, I was impressed by the medium feel of the mattress, and how balanced sleeping on it felt. It works for a wide range of sleepers, especially if you like a floating sensation – one that makes you feel buoyant, compared to traditional memory foam.

However, this mattress is not for everyone. It has weaker edge support and not super strong motion isolation. This means it may not be ideal for couples, or those who want firm edges on their mattress.

In the pro column though, the Purple Plus had great performance in our testing, when it came to temperature regulation, ease of movement, and durability.

In our opinion, the Purple Plus is a great choice for solo sleepers, as well as anyone who wants a more responsive foam mattress. It offers great value for the money, and a very calming sleep experience overall.
