Firmness and Feel Comparison

We rated the Origin Adapt 6.5/10 and the Beautyrest Silver 5.5/10, but the numbers on the firmness scale do not explain the differences in feel. The Origin initially feels softer because its memory foam wraps around the body. As you settle, the coil system supplies stronger underlying pushback. The result is a contouring medium-firm feel.

The BRS900 feels flatter and less enveloping. Its quilted top provides a small amount of surface softness, but you quickly reach the firmer transition foam and pocketed coils. It feels more like a familiar hotel mattress: supportive and easy to understand, but not especially luxurious.

Construction and Materials

Both are 12-inch hybrids, but Origin has a more complex and detailed comfort system. Its construction includes a Tencel-polyester cover, wool, bamboo-infused memory foam, responsive comfort foams, HexaGrid, graphite-infused foam, individually wrapped coils, stability foam and a reinforced perimeter. Origin states that the mattress is fiberglass-free and uses CertiPUR-US-certified foams and OEKO-TEX Standard fibers.

The Beautyrest Silver has a simpler build: a quilted cover with fiber fill, roughly one inch of gel-infused AirCool foam, firm transition foam, the 900 Series Pocketed Coil system, foam edge encasement and stabilizing base foam.

The BRS900’s simplicity is not automatically a weakness. Its coil core and foam encasement create a stable, responsive mattress. However, Origin’s deeper comfort system produces better contouring, a more polished surface feel and stronger temperature performance.

Pressure Relief

Origin is the clear winner for pressure relief. Its foam relieved pressure in our shoulders and hips while side sleeping, filled the lumbar gap on our backs and still provided enough lift for comfortable stomach sleeping. We scored it 9.1/10.

The BRS900 earned the equivalent of 6.0/10. Its quilted top softens the first contact, but the cushion is thin and the firmer support layers become noticeable quickly. We experienced mild pressure around the hips and shoulders. Back sleepers may appreciate the flatter support, but strict side sleepers may need more foam or a plusher topper.

Cooling: Which Sleeps Cooler?

The Origin Adapt is the clear cooling winner. Its cover felt cool on contact, and the surface measured 88°F after 30 minutes in our protocol. The cover feels cool-to-the-touch because it is made from Tenecel fibers, which is a combination of natural wood pulp sourced primarily from eucalyptus, beech, and spruce trees. Wool, open-cell foam, graphite-infused foam and the coil cavity may all contribute, although bedding and room conditions also affect temperature.

The BRS900 was temperature-neutral rather than cooling. Its pocketed coils allow air to move through the mattress, but the cover does not create a cooling sensation and the upper foams retained some warmth. It should be acceptable for many sleepers, but we would choose Origin for someone who regularly sleeps hot.

This difference matters because a review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology found that thermal conditions can influence wakefulness, slow-wave sleep and REM sleep, with bedding and clothing affecting the response.

Edge Support

Both mattresses performed well in our edge support test, but the Beautyrest Silver is slightly more stable. Its foam encasement created one of the most stable edges in its price range. Sitting near the perimeter felt secure, and the mattress remained easy to stand from.

We measured only two inches of seated compression on the Origin Adapt, and lying near the perimeter felt stable. Origin has the more comfortable edge because of its contouring foam, while Beautyrest has the flatter, firmer boundary.

Durability and Lifespan

Based on the mattress’ construction and consumer reviews, we estimate the lifespan of the BRS900 will be six to eight years. Its established pocketed-coil design and foam encasement are reassuring for an inexpensive mattress, although its thinner comfort layers may soften with regular use.

A sleeper’s body weight, frequency of use and the mattress foundation used can all impact the how long a mattress will last.

Origin’s 95.5-pound queen, reinforced edges, dense support structure and substantial coil system are all positive indications that it should also last six to eight years. Origin does not publish every foam-density or coil-gauge detail, and we have not observed years of wear. We would give Origin the edge in initial build quality and Beautyrest the edge in track-record confidence.

Pricing and Value

There is a very narrow price difference between these mattresses that make it an interesting comparison. The Origin Adapt queen was $599 at the time of testing, and we paid $549 for the Beautyrest Silver BRS900 at Costco. At that $50 difference, Origin is the better value because the improvements in pressure relief, cooling, higher quality materials and overall comfort are substantial.

The BRS900 becomes more compelling when it falls below $500. It is also easier to find through major retailers who offer free in-home delivery and set up. Costco pricing has historically ranged from approximately $399 to $600. At department and mattress stores, prices may reach $650 to $899, which makes the value less compelling.

We recommend that if the price is about the same, buy Origin Adapt. If the Beautyrest is at least $150 less and you prefer a traditional feel, buy the BRS900.
