The Bear Elite Hybrid mattress has generated a lot of buzz for its cooling and recovery features and having the superior comfort and support for athletes and people looking for pain relief.  In this hands-on review, we will analyze firmness, motion transfer, edge support, cooling, and durability to determine whether it justifies its premium price point, and what type of sleepers will benefit the most.

All photos in this review were taken during our real-world testing of the Bear Elite Hybrid (queen medium). It is also important to note that mattresses alone do not provide guaranteed pain relief of athletic recovery.

Mattress Millionaires Quick Verdict: Bear Elite Hybrid

The Bear Elite Hybrid is one of Bear’s most premium mattresses. After testing it ourselves, the biggest thing that stood out was the soft, pillowy, bouncy feel. It is not a flat, firm, traditional hybrid. Our first impression was the plush sensation followed by a supportive coil system underneath giving it bounce and ease of movement.

The mattress was comfortable on both the back and side sleep positions and the edges felt stronger than expected for such a soft hybrid. It performed very well in our hands-on test for comfort, responsiveness, ease of movement and edge support.

The one disadvantage was that because of the bouncy and responsive feel, that motion isolation was only moderate. Also the cooling features were not as strong as we were expecting given the cover and cooling features.

✔ Bear Elite Hybrid Is Best For

  • Side sleepers who want a soft, pressure-relieving top without feeling stuck in foam.
  • Back sleepers who like cushioning under the lower back while still getting strong underlying support.
  • Combination sleepers who want ease of movement.
  • Couples who want strong edge support and a more responsive feel.
  • Sleepers who dislike the sinking sensation of dense memory foam.

X Bear Elite Hybrid Is NOT Best For

  • People who want a cooling mattress with a cool-to-the-touch surface.
  • Very sensitive couples who need maximum motion isolation.
  • Sleepers who love deep contouring memory foam.
  • Budget shoppers looking for a simple value mattress.
  • Sleepers who prefer a firmer, flatter, less pillowy surface feel.

How We Tested And Scored

Every product we review is tested using a clear, repeatable methodology. We evaluate construction, pressure relief, spinal alignment, cooling, motion isolation, edge support, responsiveness, and real-world sleep performance through multiple-night testing.

All of are photos and measurements are from our original results. We also let you know our honest thoughts on how a mattress actually feels, not just lab-style metrics, because real life matters more than just specs.

Hands-On Testing: Bear Elite Hybrid

Unboxing and First Impression

The setup and unboxing were easy and straightforward for a boxed mattress. We didn’t struggle to get the mattress into position and it expanded quickly and reached its full size in 48 hours.

The Bear Elite’s pillowy top gives it an inviting feel from the start. Some beds feel stiff at first and need time to break in, but the Bear Elite feels comfortable right away.

We paid close attention to whether the mattress matched its marketing. Bear promotes this as a premium, recovery-focused hybrid with cooling features and zoned support. In our test, the comfort and responsiveness were obvious. The mattress felt plush, supportive, and easy to move on. Edge support was also strong.

Cooling was more nuanced. We did not feel trapped in heat, but the surface was not noticeably cool-to-the-touch. Motion isolation was also mixed. The comfort foams help absorb movement, but the coils and bounce mean this is not a dead-still mattress.

Overall the Bear Elite Hybrid is a very good mattress, especially for people who like plush comfort with bounce, and it will be a great fit for athletes looking for pressure relief with moderate cooling. See our in-depth review on is Bear Elite Hybrid good for athletes for more details.

Comfort

Comfort is where the Bear Elite Hybrid really delivers. The mattress provides a plush, cozy feel without sinking too much. We really liked the balance between softness and support.

The cover’s shimmery design makes it look more premium and stands out compared to standard, white quilted covers.

We found the mattress to be comfortable across a variety of sleep positions, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of sleepers. If you want softness without a deep sinking sensation and without sacrificing the necessary firmness to maintain neutral spinal alignment, then the Bear Elite will meet your needs

Mattress Millionaires Firmness Rating: 6/10

The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in multiple firmness options to choose from. We tested the medium model, as research supports that a medium-firm mattress is the optimal choice for most sleepers.

Based on our testing, we would describe the feel of the Mediumvoption as plush on top with a supportive base underneath. We give it a 6/10 for a firmness rating.

The mattress also comes in a soft and firm option. For most side sleepers soft or medium will feel the best. For most back sleepers, medium will feel the best. Heavier-weight sleepers might prefer the firm model.

Pressure Relief

The mattress provided strong pressure relief, especially during side sleeping. The pillowy top gives ideal cushioning in the shoulders and hips. This matters because side sleepers usually need more cushioning than back or stomach sleepers. A mattress that is too firm can create pressure around the shoulders and hips.

The Bear Elite does a good job softening those contact points without making the whole mattress feel mushy. The top has enough give to feel comfortable, but the coils prevent the body from sinking too far.

For back sleeping, the pressure relief is also good. We felt enough cushioning under the lower back and shoulder blades, but the bed still kept us lifted.

The only sleepers who may need to be careful are strict stomach sleepers on the softer versions. Too much plushness can let the hips dip, which can throw the lower back out of alignment.

Support

The Bear Elite has a 5-zoned individually wrapped coil system that promotes healthy spinal alignment in every sleep positions. This support system is what helps keep the plush top from sinking too much.

A plush top alone can feel nice for a few minutes, but if the mattress does not have a strong support system, it can become uncomfortable overnight. The Bear Elite avoids that problem better than many soft-feeling mattresses because the coils create lift and stability below the comfort layers.

Back sleeping felt especially comfortable. We felt supported through the hips and lower back, not like the midsection was sinking into a hole. Side sleeping also worked well because the top cushioned the body while the deeper layers kept the spine from dipping too far.

Back sleeper testing support on the Bear Elite Hybrid Medium mattress
In our back-sleeping test, the Bear Elite Hybrid balanced plush surface comfort with supportive lift underneath.

For heavier sleepers, the firmness choice matters more. The softer model may feel too plush, especially for stomach sleeping. The firmer model should offer better support for sleepers who need more lift.

Motion Isolation

Test ball compressing the quilted surface of the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress
The Bear Elite’s quilted top showed noticeable surface cushioning without the deep sink of traditional memory foam.

Since the Bear Elite has a responsive and bouncy surface, so motion isolation was weaker than other hybrid mattresses we have tested. The comfort foam absorbs some movement, but we definitely noticed some movement when one person would change positions or get in and out of bed.

If you are a couple who is sensitive to movement, then you might want to consider options, but if you are a couple who cares more about strong edge support and having softness without feeling stuck, then the Bear Elite Hybrid is a strong option.

Edge Support

Considering the soft, pillowy top, we would rate the edge support as very strong for the Bear Elite Hybrid. During our edge sitting test, the mattress only compressed 1.5 inches, which is less than other soft hybrid mattress with thick foam layers on the top that we have tested.

Edge support test on the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress using a ruler to measure compression
During our edge-sitting test, the Bear Elite Hybrid compressed about 1.5 inches.

That matters for couples because stronger edges make the mattress feel larger. If you share a queen or king, usable edge support gives both people more room to spread out. It also matters for people who sit on the side of the bed to put on shoes, get dressed, or get in and out of bed.

Cooling

Cooling is one area where our opinion differs from Bear’s marketing.

Bear promotes the Elite Hybrid as a cooling mattress, and the construction does include cooling-focused materials. It has breathable coils, copper-infused foam, and a Celliant cover. There is also an optional cooling upgrade, but we tested the standard model without the optional CoolForce™ layer.

But in our hands-on test, the mattress was not immediately cool-to-the-touch. When we placed our hand on the surface and lay down on the bed, it did not have that immediate cold sensation some shoppers may expect from a cooling mattress.

However, it stayed moderately cool and felt breathable throughout the night. It didn’t retain heat, but we also wouldn’t call it actively cooling.

Responsiveness

We felt the responsiveness of the Bear Elite right away. When you press into the surface or change from one position to another, the mattress responds quickly. It does not have the slow, melting sensation of traditional memory foam.

This makes it a good fit for combination sleepers and anyone who wants a plush feel without deep contouring.

Durability

The Bear Elite Hybrid has the kind of construction we like to see in a premium mattress: a tall profile, multiple comfort layers, a coil support system, reinforced edges, and dense base foam.

A 14-inch hybrid usually has more room for comfort and support materials than a thinner mattress. That does not automatically guarantee durability, but it is a positive sign. The coil system should also help the mattress maintain structure over time, especially compared with lower-quality all-foam beds.

The long-term durability will depend on the sleeper’s weight, chosen firmness, foundation, and rotation habits. We would be more cautious with heavier sleepers choosing the soft model because softer comfort layers tend to show impressions faster than firmer builds. For better long-term support, heavier sleepers should lean Medium or Firm.

Noise & Off-Gassing

The Bear Elite Hybrid was quiet in our testing. We did not notice squeaking or creaking from the mattress itself while moving around.

As with most bed-in-a-box mattresses, some off-gassing is possible after unboxing. This is common with compressed foam mattresses. We recommend opening it in a well-ventilated room and giving it time to expand before adding sheets and bedding.

The smell should not be a dealbreaker for most people, but sensitive sleepers may want to let it air out longer before sleeping on it.

Sex Performance

The Bear Elite Hybrid should perform very well for sex.

The biggest positives are bounce, responsiveness, edge support, and ease of movement. The mattress does not make you feel stuck, and the surface responds quickly. That makes changing positions easier and less tiring than it can be on slow-moving memory foam.

The edges also feel strong enough to use more of the mattress surface. That is important for couples because weak edges can make a bed feel smaller and less stable.

The main downside is the same one we mentioned in motion isolation: bounce transfers more movement. But for sex performance, that bounce is usually a positive.

Sleep Positions

The Bear Elite Hybrid ranked well in multiple sleep positions during our hands-on testing, making it an ideal choice for combination sleepers, couples, side sleepers and back sleepers.

Sleep Position Performance Notes
Side Sleepers
★★★★★
The soft, pillowy top cushions pressure points around the shoulders and hips without making the mattress feel difficult to move across.
Back Sleepers
★★★★★
We found it especially comfortable on our back. The plush top adds cushioning while the coil system provides enough lift and support through the lower back.
Combination Sleepers
★★★★★
One of this mattress’s biggest strengths. It is bouncy, responsive, and easy to change positions on without feeling trapped in foam.
Stomach Sleepers
★★★☆☆
The Firm model is the safest choice for stomach sleepers. The Soft and Medium options may allow too much hip sinkage for strict stomach sleeping.

Construction

Measuring the height of the Bear Elite Hybrid mattress during hands-on testing
We measured the Bear Elite Hybrid’s tall, substantial profile during our in-home testing.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14-inch hybrid mattress with several comfort and support layers. Here is a layer-by-layer look at what is inside the Medium model and how it affects the feel.

Layer Material Purpose What You’ll Notice: Medium Model
1. Cover Quilted Celliant® cover Creates the premium outer finish while adding a lightly cushioned first layer. A soft, pillowy first impression with a shimmery design. It looks upscale, though it does not feel noticeably cool-to-the-touch.
2. Quilted Comfort Foam Plush quilt foam Adds initial softness and pressure relief before you reach the deeper comfort layers. This is a big reason the Bear Elite feels soft and inviting right away rather than firm or flat.
3. Memory Foam Copper-infused memory foam Adds contouring pressure relief around the shoulders, hips, and lower back. You get cushioning and gentle contouring, especially while side sleeping, without the deep stuck-in-the-bed feeling of a traditional foam mattress.
4. Responsive Comfort Foam Responsive foam Helps the mattress recover quickly and adds more bounce than slow-moving memory foam alone. The mattress feels lively and easy to move across. Changing positions takes very little effort.
5. Transition Layer Dynamic transition foam Buffers your body from the coil system while creating a smoother move from comfort to support. You feel supported underneath the plush top instead of dropping abruptly onto the springs.
6. Support Core Individually wrapped zoned coils Provides deep support, airflow, bounce, and stronger reinforcement around the mattress perimeter. Stronger edge support, good lift under the lower back, and a bouncy feel that works especially well for back and combination sleepers.
7. Base Layer High-density DuraDense foam Stabilizes the coil system and helps the mattress hold its shape over time. You will not directly feel this layer, but it helps the bed feel substantial, stable, and supportive rather than flimsy.

Pricing & Value

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a premium mattress, so it is not the cheapest option in Bear’s lineup. You are paying for a taller build, more comfort layers, zoned coils, a reinforced support system, and Bear’s recovery-focused materials.

At the time of testing, we paid $1,698 for the queen medium version with no additional upgrades. This was a 30% off the full price listed with promo codes.

If you are looking for the lowest price, this is probably not the mattress to choose. There are more affordable hybrids that can give you basic comfort and support for less money.

If you want a more luxurious feel, strong edge support, bounce, and a plush top, the Bear Elite makes more sense. It feels like a step above a basic boxed hybrid.

The biggest value argument is that the Bear Elite offers a combination that many shoppers want: soft comfort, responsive support, multiple firmness options, and good edge strength. That makes it more versatile than a one-firmness mattress.

Our advice: do not pay full price if you can avoid it. Bear frequently runs promotions, so compare the current sale price before buying. Also pay attention to whether you are adding the cooling upgrade, because that can change the final price.

Comparisons

Bear Elite Hybrid vs. Bear Original

The Bear Original is an all-foam mattress and should feel simpler, flatter, and less bouncy. The Bear Elite is thicker, more responsive, more supportive around the edges, and more luxurious overall. Choose the Bear Original if you want a lower price and foam feel. Choose the Bear Elite if you want a premium hybrid.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs. Helix Midnight

The Helix Midnight has a balanced hybrid feel and is a popular choice for side sleepers. The Bear Elite feels more plush and pillowy on top, with a more luxury-style finish. The Helix may appeal more to shoppers who want a straightforward medium hybrid, while the Bear Elite is better if you want a thicker, more premium build.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs DreamCloud Premier

The DreamCloud Premier has a plush Euro-top, excellent pressure relief and strong motion isolation at an exceptional price for a premium hybrid mattress. It is not as bouncy as the Bear Elite, making it an ideal choice for couples who want strong motion isolation and side sleepers who want deep pressure relief.

For a more in-depth analysis, read our full Bear Elite vs DreamCloud Premier comparison article.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs. Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic feels more traditional, buoyant, and innerspring-like. The Bear Elite has more of a plush hybrid feel with a cushioned top. Saatva also has free white glove delivery, while Bear is compressed and shipped in a box. Choose Saatva if you want a classic hotel-style innerspring feel. Choose Bear if you want a softer quilted top with more foam comfort.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs. WinkBed

Both are premium hybrids with strong edge support and responsive coil systems. WinkBed has a more traditional luxury hybrid feel, while Bear Elite feels softer and more pillowy at the surface. If you want a firmer, more structured feel, WinkBed may be better. If you want more cushion on top, Bear Elite may be better.

Bear Elite Hybrid vs. Puffy Lux Hybrid

Puffy Lux Hybrid has a deeper, softer, more contouring feel. Bear Elite is easier to move on and feels more responsive. Puffy is better for side sleepers who want a soft, hugging feel. Bear is better for combination sleepers who want plush comfort but do not want to feel stuck.

Final Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a strong premium mattress, but the reason to buy it is not just the cooling marketing or the shimmery cover.

The real reason to buy it is the feel.

It has a soft, pillowy top that makes the mattress immediately comfortable, plus a bouncy and responsive support system that keeps it easy to move on. It worked well for us in both back and side sleeping positions, and the edge support was stronger than we expected from a mattress with this much plushness on top.

The biggest downside is motion isolation. It is moderate, not excellent. Couples who are extremely sensitive to movement may want something more motion-absorbing. Cooling is also good but not dramatic in our experience. The Bear Elite did not sleep hot, but it was not cool-to-the-touch.

Overall, we would recommend the Bear Elite Hybrid for side sleepers, back sleepers, combination sleepers, and couples who want comfort, bounce, and strong edges. We would be more cautious for strict stomach sleepers, very hot sleepers who need an icy surface, and anyone who wants the slow, deep hug of memory foam.

Bear Elite Hybrid FAQs

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid a good mattress?

Yes. The Bear Elite Hybrid is a good mattress, especially for sleepers who want a soft pillow-top feel with responsive coil support. It is comfortable, easy to move on, and supportive enough for many side and back sleepers.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid good for side sleepers?

Yes. Side sleepers are one of the best matches for the Bear Elite Hybrid, especially on the Soft or Medium model. The plush top helps cushion the shoulder and hip, while the coils provide support underneath.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid good for back sleepers?

Yes. We found the Bear Elite comfortable for back sleeping because it has enough cushioning for comfort but enough coil support to keep the body lifted. Back sleepers should likely choose Medium or Firm depending on body weight.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid good for stomach sleepers?

It depends on the firmness. Strict stomach sleepers should choose the Firm model. The Soft and Medium versions may allow too much hip sinkage, especially for heavier stomach sleepers.

Does the Bear Elite Hybrid sleep cool?

The Bear Elite Hybrid sleeps temperature neutral to cool, but in our testing, it was not cool-to-the-touch. It did not feel hot, but it also did not have an icy surface feel. Hot sleepers may want to consider the cooling upgrade.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid good for couples?

Yes, with one caveat. It has strong edge support, bounce, and easy movement, which are all good for couples. However, motion isolation is only moderate, so very sensitive sleepers may feel a partner moving.

Does the Bear Elite Hybrid have good edge support?

Yes. We found the edge support pretty strong, especially for a mattress with a soft, pillowy top. Sitting and lying near the edge both felt stable.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid bouncy?

Yes. The Bear Elite Hybrid is bouncy and responsive. That makes it easy to move across and good for combination sleepers, but it also means motion transfer is more noticeable than on some foam mattresses.

Does the Bear Elite Hybrid feel like memory foam?

Not really. It has some contouring from foam layers, but it does not feel like a slow, dense memory foam mattress. It feels more like a plush hybrid with bounce.

What firmness should I choose?

Side sleepers should consider Soft or Medium. Back sleepers should consider Medium or Firm. Stomach sleepers should choose Firm. Heavier sleepers should generally lean firmer for better support.

Is the Bear Elite Hybrid worth the money?

It can be worth it if you want a premium hybrid with a plush top, strong edges, responsive support, and multiple firmness options. It is not the best value if you simply want the cheapest comfortable mattress.

What is the biggest downside of the Bear Elite Hybrid?

The biggest downside is motion isolation. It is not terrible, but because the mattress is bouncy and responsive, movement can travel more than it would on a dense all-foam bed.

What surprised us most about the Bear Elite Hybrid?

The edge support surprised us most. With such a soft, pillowy top, we expected the edges to feel weaker. Instead, the perimeter felt pretty strong and usable.

Who should avoid the Bear Elite Hybrid?

Avoid it if you want maximum motion isolation, a true cool-to-the-touch surface, deep memory foam hug, or a very firm, flat mattress feel. Strict stomach sleepers should avoid the softer versions.
