How We Evaluated the Kirkland Lakeridge

Mattress Millionaires purchased and tested the 14.5-inch Lakeridge Pillow Top in our home sleep lab. We evaluated its overall feel, pressure relief, support, motion isolation, edge stability and temperature. We also compared our experience with Costco’s published specifications and the current Stearns & Foster retail lineup.

Our hands-on comments in this article apply to the Pillow Top. We have not personally slept on the newer Tight Top version, so our description of that model is based on its construction, Costco’s firm classification and verified owner feedback. We do not treat two mattresses as identical simply because they share a manufacturer or a few branded materials.

What Is the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge?

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge is a Costco-exclusive mattress made by Stearns & Foster. Costco currently lists two versions online:

• 14.5-inch Pillow Top: Classified by Costco as medium. It has more surface cushioning but still feels supportive and firmer than the word “pillow top” may suggest.
• 14-inch Tight Top: Classified by Costco as firm. It has a flatter, more tightly quilted surface with less initial sinkage.

Both are currently offered in queen, king and California king sizes. Shoppers looking for a twin, twin XL or full will need to consider another model.

Costco classifies the mattresses as innerspring models. We also think of them as hybrid-style mattresses because they combine substantial foam comfort layers with an innerspring support core. The most important point is how they feel: these are coil-forward mattresses, not deeply conforming foam beds.

That is important with the Lakeridge: the additional top layer provides cushioning, but the strong coil system still gives the mattress a sturdy, supportive feel.

The Lakeridge includes several materials and design features associated with Stearns & Foster:

TENCEL™ Lyocell Cover

The Lakeridge’s knit cover uses TENCEL™ Lyocell, a soft and breathable fiber made from wood-derived cellulose. According to Tom’s Guide’s explanation of how TENCEL fabric helps sleepers stay cool, the fibers absorb moisture away from the skin while their open structure promotes airflow and is less likely to trap body heat than some synthetic fabrics.

This can help the Lakeridge’s surface feel cooler and less clammy during the night. However, TENCEL is a passive breathability feature—not an active cooling technology—and the thick foam layers underneath the cover may still retain some warmth.

TEMPUR-Indulge™ Memory Foam

The comfort system includes TEMPUR-Indulge™ Memory Foam, a material engineered by Tempur-Pedic for Stearns & Foster. It adds contouring and pressure relief above the coils. The Pillow Top uses more cushioning at the surface, while the Tight Top is designed to feel flatter and firmer.

IntelliCoil® Support System

The coil system is the foundation of the Lakeridge’s feel. It provides a responsive, supportive surface that keeps sleepers more on top of the mattress than deeply hugged inside it. Reinforcement around the perimeter helps create a more stable sitting and sleeping edge. Air vents along the sides are designed to promote airflow through the mattress. The coil core also leaves more open space for ventilation than a solid foam base.

How Does the Lakeridge Pillow Top Feel?

In our testing, the Lakeridge Pillow Top felt supportive first and plush second. There is noticeable cushioning at the surface, but you reach the firmer support system quickly. It feels closer to a traditional luxury hotel mattress than a deeply conforming memory foam mattress.

That balance can work well for back sleepers and combination sleepers who want some pressure relief without feeling stuck. Side sleepers may appreciate the extra cushioning, but lightweight side sleepers or anyone with sensitive shoulders may prefer a softer mattress with deeper contouring.

The Tight Top should feel firmer and flatter. Based on its construction and Costco’s firm designation, it is the more logical choice for stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers who dislike sinkage and shoppers who intentionally want a hard, traditional surface. It is less likely to work for side sleepers who need substantial pressure relief.

Performance: Where the Lakeridge Competes With Retail

Support and Spinal Alignment

Support is one of the Lakeridge’s strengths. The coil-forward design keeps the torso and hips lifted better than many softer bed-in-a-box hybrids. Back sleepers should find the Pillow Top supportive, while stomach sleepers will likely prefer the firmer Tight Top.

No mattress can guarantee relief from back pain. Comfort depends on body weight, sleep position and the source of the pain. The goal is to choose a surface that maintains a comfortable, neutral position without creating excessive pressure.

Pressure Relief

The Pillow Top provides better pressure relief than the Tight Top, especially around the shoulders and hips. However, it remains a relatively sturdy mattress. Side sleepers who equate “pillow top” with soft should pay attention to this distinction.

Motion Isolation

The foam layers and individually responding coil design help absorb a reasonable amount of movement. We would describe the Pillow Top’s motion isolation as good for a traditional innerspring-style mattress, but not as deadening as a thick all-foam bed. Very light sleepers may still notice a partner getting in or out of bed.

Edge Support

Edge support is another strong point. The reinforced perimeter makes it easier to sit on the side of the mattress and gives couples more usable sleeping space. This is especially helpful on a queen, where both sleepers may regularly use the outer third of the bed.

Cooling

The Lakeridge has a breathable cover, side vents and a coil system that allows airflow. Those features make it more breathable than many all-foam mattresses. However, the Pillow Top still contains thick foam close to the body, so we would not choose it specifically for a very hot sleeper.

Research published in Building and Environment also shows that mattress ventilation can influence the thermal environment around the sleeper. However, that study evaluated an actively ventilated mattress, while the Lakeridge uses passive side vents. We therefore view the AirVent system as a helpful breathability feature—not evidence that the Lakeridge will perform like an actively cooled mattress.

A retail Stearns & Foster may offer upgraded cooling materials depending on the collection, but buyers should compare the specific model rather than assuming every higher-priced mattress will sleep dramatically cooler.

Responsiveness

The strong coil system makes the Lakeridge easier to move around on than slow-response memory foam. The Pillow Top softens that bounce, while the Tight Top should feel more immediate and responsive. Combination sleepers who change positions during the night may appreciate that mobility.

Is the Kirkland Lakeridge the Same as a Retail Stearns & Foster?

No. The Lakeridge is made by Stearns & Foster and uses several of the brand’s recognizable technologies, but it is a Costco-exclusive design. It should not be treated as a renamed Estate, Lux Estate or Reserve mattress.

Retail Stearns & Foster collections offer different comfort systems, upholstery details, profiles and firmness options. Higher collections may use more complex constructions and more premium finishes. You are also paying for a broader showroom selection and the ability to choose a more specific feel.

The Lakeridge simplifies the decision. Costco gives you two main choices—medium Pillow Top or Firm Tight Top—and prices them aggressively. That limited selection is part of the trade-off, but it is also why the value is so strong.

What Does the Higher Stearns & Foster Retail Price Buy?

Stearns & Foster’s retail lineup starts at approximately $1,899 for a queen, while more premium models and configurations can cost several thousand dollars. Compared with the Lakeridge, the extra money may buy:

• More firmness and comfort choices
• More elaborate pillow tops or comfort systems
• Upgraded materials in higher collections
• More refined covers, quilting and cosmetic details
• The opportunity to compare models in person at a participating retailer

Those benefits matter if you are highly particular about feel. For example, a side sleeper who finds the Lakeridge too firm may be better served by paying more for a retail model that provides deeper pressure relief. A shopper who simply wants a sturdy, premium-feeling mattress at the lowest price may not receive enough additional comfort to justify the retail premium.

Price and Value

The Lakeridge is difficult to beat on price. At the time of publication, the queen Tight Top was listed at $949 and the queen Pillow Top at $999. Costco’s online price also includes room-of-choice delivery, setup, packaging removal and haul-away of an eligible old mattress and foundation.

Those services have real value. Some mattress brands charge extra for white-glove delivery or do not offer old-mattress removal at all. With the Lakeridge, you are also avoiding the challenge of moving a very heavy mattress through your home yourself.

The question is not whether the Lakeridge is the most sophisticated Stearns & Foster mattress. It is not. The question is whether a retail model will make you sleep enough better to justify spending at least several hundred dollars more—and potentially several thousand more. For most value-focused shoppers, the Lakeridge wins that calculation.

Durability

Costco shoppers generally rate both versions highly. When we checked in August 2026, the Pillow Top held approximately 4.4 out of 5 stars from more than 12,000 reviews, while the newer Tight Top held approximately 4.5 stars from more than 1,000 reviews.

The large review volume is reassuring, but it does not eliminate durability concerns. Some Pillow Top owners report body impressions or sagging after extended use. That is a common risk with thick, cushioned mattresses because the comfort layers usually soften before the coil system fails.

Costco’s online listing includes delivery to the room of choice, setup, packaging removal and haul-away of an eligible old mattress and foundation. Delivery coverage is generally within 50 miles of a Costco warehouse, with exceptions and possible additional charges in some locations.

The Lakeridge includes a 10-year warranty. Warranty coverage is not the same as a comfort trial: it applies to qualifying defects under the written terms, not simply a change in firmness preference.

Costco also states that merchandise is covered by its satisfaction guarantee, subject to exceptions and limitations, and that Costco.com products can be returned to a warehouse. Costco does not advertise the Lakeridge with a fixed 100-night or 365-night trial, so we would not describe its policy that way. Read the current policy and confirm the return process for a large mattress before ordering.

Stearns & Foster retail return and exchange terms can vary depending on where you purchase. The brand’s current mattresses carry a 10-year limited warranty, but a local retailer may have its own delivery charges, comfort-exchange fees or trial requirements.
