Mattress Millionaires Quick Verdict: Avocado Green vs Saatva Classic

We tested the Avocado Green Medium and the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm in our own home. The Avocado Green felt firmer, flatter and more responsive with very light cushioning on the top. It performed especially well for stomach sleepers and back sleepers and it is a strong choice for anyone who wants certified organic materials.

For a deeper breakdown of materials, testing and performance, read our full Avocado Green Mattress review.

The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm had a more traditional luxurious feel. The Euro pillow top was plush without deep sinkage, and the dual-coil system kept our bodies lifted and created excellent lumbar and edge support.

Firmness and Feel Comparison

These two mattresses are both listed as medium firmness options by their manufacturers, but they feel very different.

Avocado describes its Green Medium as the middle comfort option, but we thought it felt closer to a 7–7.5 out of 10. It felt firmer than most medium mattresses we have tested. The surface stayed flat beneath our bodies, and the latex rebounded immediately when we changed positions.

Measuring sinkage on the Avocado Green mattress with a weighted ball and ruler
Our weighted-ball test demonstrated the Avocado Green’s firm surface and limited sinkage.

There was little of the soft initial cushioning normally associated with a luxury hybrid. The Avocado felt more like a high-quality, firm innerspring mattress with strong pushback than a foam-heavy hybrid.

The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm felt like a true 6.5 out of 10. Its Euro pillow top softened the initial contact, while the two coil layers prevented deep sinking. We felt comfortably cushioned without becoming trapped in the mattress.

Hands pressing into the Saatva Classic Euro pillow top
The Saatva Classic’s Euro pillow top compressed more easily than the Avocado, creating a softer initial feel.

Saatva currently offers Plush Soft, Luxury Firm and Firm comfort levels. Avocado’s Green collection includes Medium, Firm and Plush models on its main product page, while Extra Firm and Ultra-Plush are specialty configurations sold separately. The exact feel and height depend on the model selected.

Firmness winner: Saatva Classic for broader appeal and a better balance between cushioning and support.

Construction and Materials

If you prioritize natural and certified organic materials, the Avocado Green is the better choice. The Avocado Green Medium uses GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, three inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex and individually wrapped coils arranged across seven ergonomic zones.

Measuring the height of the Avocado Green Medium mattress
Our Avocado Green Medium measured approximately 11 inches tall, consistent with the advertised profile.

Instead of gluing the main layers together, Avocado secures them with hand needle-tufting. The mattress does not contain polyurethane foam or memory foam. Avocado also states that the complete mattress is GOTS-certified organic and holds certifications including GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE and OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

The Saatva Classic combines a three-inch Euro pillow top, a targeted lumbar-support section, individually wrapped comfort coils and a lower base-coil system. A high-density foam rail reinforces the perimeter.

Saatva uses a breathable cover containing organic cotton, but the entire mattress is not organic. It also contains CertiPUR-US-certified polyurethane and memory foams. The Classic is GREENGUARD Gold certified.

The Avocado has the cleaner and more thoroughly certified construction. The Saatva, however, uses its materials more effectively to create a plush luxury feel.

Materials winner: Avocado Green

Pressure Relief

The Saatva Classic clearly performed better for pressure relief.

While side sleeping on the Avocado Green Medium, I experienced some compression around my hips. The surface had some pushback against my body instead of gradually cushioning the hip and shoulder. That firm resistance is helpful for stomach sleeping, but it can concentrate pressure for side sleepers.

The Avocado Green Medium felt too firm around the hip and shoulder during our side-sleeping test.

Mattress material can influence how pressure is distributed across the body. In one laboratory study comparing latex and polyurethane-foam mattresses, latex provided more even and balanced pressure relief than foam.

The Saatva Classic’s Euro pillow top provided more softness and cushioning around the hips and shoulders. During our testing, it provided enough cushioning to make side sleeping comfortable without causing the midsection to sink excessively.

Saatva’s cushioned Euro pillow top provided better pressure relief around our hips and shoulders.

Side sleepers who prefer more cushion may want to consider the Saatva Plush Soft or Avocado Plush.

Pressure-relief winner: Saatva Classic

Cooling: Which Sleeps Cooler?

This category is nearly a tie.

The Avocado Green uses breathable cotton, moisture-regulating wool, latex and an open coil system. Latex generally sleeps more temperature-neutral than slow-response memory foam. The mattress also keeps the body close to the surface, limiting the amount of material surrounding the torso.

The Saatva Classic also performed exceptionally well. After 30 minutes of lying in one position, we measured a surface temperature of approximately 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Its breathable cover and dual-coil construction allow heat to dissipate more easily than it would through a dense foam core.

Neither mattress has an artificially cold cover, but both remained temperature-neutral during testing.

Cooling winner: Tie

Edge Support

Both mattresses have exceptional edge support.

The Avocado Green uses firmer coils around all four sides. We measured approximately one inch of compression during our seated test, and the perimeter remained stable when we lay near the edge.

The Avocado Green compressed by approximately one inch during our seated edge-support test.

The Saatva Classic was even more impressive in our seated test, compressing by only about half an inch. Its reinforced foam perimeter felt firm and consistent with the center of the mattress.

The Saatva Classic compressed by only about half an inch during our seated edge-support test.

Both are strong choices for couples who need to use the entire surface of a queen mattress. Strong edges can also make getting into and out of bed easier.

Edge-support winner: Tie, with a slight measured advantage for Saatva

Durability and Lifespan

The Avocado Green has the advantage for projected longevity. Natural latex is highly resilient, and the mattress does not rely on thick polyurethane foam layers that may gradually soften. Hand tufting, reinforced seams, zoned steel coils and a substantial 101-pound queen construction add to its durable feel.

Avocado protects the mattress with a 25-year limited warranty. The first 10 years provide non-prorated coverage, while years 11 through 25 are prorated.

The Saatva Classic also feels built to last. Its triple-tempered steel coils, dual-coil system and reinforced perimeter should resist premature sagging better than many foam-based mattresses. Saatva includes a lifetime warranty, although a warranty protects against qualifying defects rather than ordinary comfort changes or wear.

We would expect both mattresses to last approximately 10 years with proper support and care. The Avocado may have the better chance of exceeding that range because of its latex construction.

Durability winner: Avocado Green

Pricing and Value

We paid $2,399 for our queen Avocado Green Medium. We paid $2,006 for the queen Saatva Classic Luxury Firm in the 11.5-inch height, compared with its listed MSRP of $2,179 at the time.

Prices and promotions change, so these figures should be used as a record of what we paid rather than a promise of the current price.

The Avocado’s premium is easier to justify if organic construction is one of your top purchasing priorities. You are paying for certified organic latex, wool and cotton, extensive finished-product certifications and hand-tufted construction.

Saatva delivers more conventional luxury for the money. Free in-home setup is included, and Saatva will remove your old mattress at no additional charge. Avocado typically ships queen and smaller sizes compressed, although optional in-home service may be available for an additional fee.

Both companies currently advertise a 365-night home trial. Avocado has a 25-year limited warranty, while Saatva offers a lifetime warranty. Review the current policies and termsΒ  before ordering.

Value winner: Saatva Classic

Final Verdict: Avocado Green vs Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic wins this comparison for most sleepers. Its combination of a cushioned Euro pillow top, strong lumbar support, excellent edges and easy movement makes it more comfortable across side, back and combination positions.

It also looks and feels more conventionally luxurious. The organic-cotton cover is smooth, the pillow top adds noticeable softness and free white-glove delivery removes the hassle of setting up a heavy mattress.

The Avocado Green remains the better choice for stomach sleepers and shoppers committed to organic materials. Its certified organic latex, cotton and wool, hand-tufted construction and firm, responsive surface distinguish it from nearly every mainstream hybrid.

Our decision comes down to comfort versus materials. The Avocado wins for organic construction, firm support and projected durability. Saatva wins for pressure relief, overall comfort, buying convenience and versatility.

Overall winner: Saatva Classic

Avocado Green vs Saatva Classic FAQs

Is the Avocado Green firmer than the Saatva Classic?

The Avocado Green Medium felt noticeably firmer than the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm during our testing. We rated the Avocado approximately 7–7.5 out of 10 and the Saatva 6.5 out of 10.

Which mattress is better for side sleepers?

The Saatva Classic Luxury Firm is better for most side sleepers because its Euro pillow top provides more cushioning around the shoulders and hips. Side sleeping was the weakest position on the Avocado Green Medium during our testing.

Which is better for stomach sleepers?

The Avocado Green Medium is the better choice. Its firm, flat surface prevented our hips from sinking excessively and kept the midsection well supported. The Saatva Firm is another option for stomach sleepers who want a more traditional luxury-innerspring feel.

Which mattress is more organic?

The Avocado Green. Its completed mattress is GOTS-certified organic and contains organic cotton, organic wool and GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. The Saatva Classic uses a cover containing organic cotton, but the entire mattress is not certified organic and it contains polyurethane foams.

Does the Avocado Green or Saatva Classic sleep cooler?

Both slept cool during our testing. Avocado combines wool, latex and coils, while Saatva uses a breathable cover and two coil layers. Neither produced the deep heat retention commonly associated with dense memory foam.

Which mattress has better motion isolation?

The Saatva Classic had a slight advantage, but neither is ideal for an extremely motion-sensitive couple. Both mattresses are responsive and somewhat bouncy. An all-foam mattress would generally absorb more partner movement.

Which mattress has better edge support?

Both have excellent edge support. We measured approximately one inch of seated compression on the Avocado Green and half an inch on the Saatva Classic. Saatva had the numerical advantage, but both allowed us to use nearly the entire surface.

Is the Avocado Green worth the price?

Yes, but primarily for shoppers who value certified organic construction, latex durability and firm support. If you do not prioritize organic materials or need substantial pressure relief, the Saatva Classic provides better overall value.
