We rated both mattresses at approximately 7 out of 10 for firmness, as they both felt firmer than a true medium. Firmness is subjective, and a firmer mattress is not automatically more supportive for every sleeper. A systematic review of controlled mattress studies found that medium-firm mattresses generally produced favorable results for sleep comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment.

The Avocado Green Medium has a flat, buoyant feel due to the use of latex that naturally compresses quickly and rebounds almost immediately. The mattress pushes back and keeps you elevated, instead of cradling your body in foam.

It reminded us more of a firm, high-quality innerspring mattress than a typical online hybrid. We noticed very little contouring, and the hand-tufted surface remained relatively flat beneath the body. This was excellent for stomach sleeping but less comfortable when we rolled onto our side.

The WinkBed Luxury Firm also keeps the body lifted, but its Euro-pillow top makes the cushioning immediately more noticeable. You can feel some softness on top, but you do not sink deeply before the coil system can be felt pushing from below.

Construction and Materials

The Avocado Green Medium has an 11-inch profile and uses certified organic materials throughout its comfort system. Its construction includes an organic cotton cover, organic wool, three total inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, and individually wrapped coils arranged in seven zones for ergonomic support.

The coil system provides targeted reinforcement around the lumbar region and greater flexibility near the shoulders. Firmer perimeter coils surround all four sides of the mattress. Avocado also uses hand tufting to secure the layers.

The WinkBed is a 13.5-inch hybrid with a smooth Tencel cover, gel-infused foam Euro-pillow top, stabilizing gel foam, individually wrapped coils, and reinforced edge support.

Its pillow top gives the mattress a softer initial touch, while its zoned coil system creates the strong lift, responsiveness, airflow, and edge stability we noticed during testing.

Pressure Relief

The WinkBed wins for pressure relief, although neither tested model is our first choice to recommend for a strict side sleeper.

Mattress pressure relief cannot be judged by firmness alone. A peer-reviewed review of mattress biomechanics explains that body pressure distribution and spinal support are influenced by mattress construction as well as a sleeper’s body characteristics and position.

The Avocado Green Medium’s limited sinkage creates a supportive surface, but we felt some compression around the hip. It was more pressure relieving lying on our back or stomach as the firm surface distributed weight effectively and prevented the midsection from dipping too far.

The WinkBed Luxury Firm’s pillow top provides more cushioning. It felt comfortable under the lower back and prevented the surface from feeling hard. However, we still noticed shoulder compression during side sleeping.

Strict side sleepers, lightweight sleepers, and people with sensitive shoulders who need stronger pressure relief may want to consider the WinkBed Softer or Avocado Green Plush models instead.

Cooling: Which Sleeps Cooler?

This category is extremely close, but we give the Avocado a slight practical advantage for shoppers who want naturally breathable materials.

The Avocado combines breathable cotton, moisture-regulating wool, latex, and an open coil system. Latex generally retains less heat than dense, deeply contouring memory foam, while the Avocado’s limited sinkage leaves less material surrounding the body. By comparison, traditional memory foam can retain body heat because of its density and close-conforming feel. We found the Avocado cool and breathable without a cold-to-the-touch performance cover.

The WinkBed also performed well. Its Tencel cover helps wick away moisture, and its foam is infused with gel to help reduce heat buildup. The coil system also allows air to move through the mattress to dissipate heat. We found it temperature-neutral to moderately cool rather than dramatically cooling.

WinkBed offers an optional cooling cover for an additional charge, but we would not consider it essential for the average sleeper. Both mattresses are good choices for people who sleep warm.

Edge Support

Both mattresses have exceptional edge support.

The Avocado Green compressed by approximately one inch during our seated edge-support test. Its firmer perimeter coils kept the side stable while sitting and prevented the sensation that we might roll off while lying near the edge.

The WinkBed performed even better in our measurement, compressing by less than half an inch during the seated test. Its reinforced perimeter made virtually the entire queen-size surface usable.

That is valuable for couples because neither person needs to crowd the center of the mattress. Strong edges can also make it easier to get out of bed or sit on the side while getting dressed.

Although the WinkBed earned a slightly higher score, both are among the strongest edge-support mattresses we have tested.

Durability and Lifespan

We cannot determine a mattress’s exact lifespan from a short home test, but both felt exceptionally substantial and well-built.

The Avocado receives our narrow durability win because of its Dunlop latex, hand tufting, reinforced coils, and relatively simple construction. Latex is known for maintaining resilience better than many lower-density polyurethane foams. The mattress is also backed by a 25-year limited warranty.

The WinkBed felt dense, heavy, and much more substantial than a lightweight bed-in-a-box mattress. Its strong coil system and reinforced perimeter create an excellent durability impression. However, the foam pillow top could gradually develop more visible impressions than the Avocado’s flatter latex surface.

With proper support and normal use, we would reasonably expect either mattress to remain comfortable for approximately eight to 10 years, potentially longer. Actual longevity depends on sleeper weight, rotation, foundation quality, and how the mattress is used.

Pricing and Value

We paid $2,399 for the queen Avocado Green Medium and $1,799 for the queen WinkBed Luxury Firm at the time of testing. Promotions change, but the $600 difference at testing is worth noting.

The WinkBed offers better value for the average shopper. It costs less, has a taller profile, provides better motion isolation and pressure relief, and comes with a lifetime limited warranty. It feels like a substantial luxury mattress without crossing as far into premium organic pricing.

The Avocado’s value depends on whether you genuinely prioritize its materials and certifications. Organic cotton, wool, certified latex, hand tufting, and California assembly are expensive features to reproduce. For shoppers trying to avoid polyurethane foam or seeking a certified organic mattress, the premium can be justified.

However, we would not recommend spending more on the Avocado simply because “organic” sounds better. If its flat, firm feel does not suit your sleep position, the materials will not make the mattress comfortable.

The Avocado is the better choice for stomach sleepers because its flat, firm surface does an excellent job keeping the hips lifted. The WinkBed wins for back sleepers because its pillow top adds more comfort while the coils maintain strong alignment.
